Speed Triple

Speed Triple
The raw, pared-to-the-bone Speed Triple is Triumph's daring and original
entry in the roadster category, and already it's won a committed
following appreciative of its combination of bold and brutal styling
allied to the performance of a cutting edge sports machine.
For 1999 the Speed Triple loses its T509 tag but gains 70cc, 2PS and a
much increased spread of torque, courtesy of its new engine based on the
Daytona 955i's awesome power plant.
Like the Sprint ST, the Speed Triple's engine has been retuned to
produce 110PS (108bhp) and 97Nm (72lb.ft) of torque, endowing it with
prodigious acceleration even from low down in the rev range. The T509's
acclaimed cycle parts, from the same thoroughbred stable as the 955i,
have been retained, ensuring precision handling and breathtaking
stopping power, while the unique style remains as uncompromising as ever
without sacrificing practicality.
The 1999 Speed Triple is as much a real world motorcycle as ever, as
capable at back road sports riding as it is at long distance touring or
urban commuting. But the engine is stronger than ever, and the style...
out of this world.
 NEW FEATURES FOR 1999
1. New engine
2. New radiator capacity
3. Revised throttle bodies
4. New air bypass system
5. Improved fuel consumption
6. New airbox
7. Revised wiring and hoses
8. Closed loop catalytic converter for some markets
9. Sealed battery
10. New frame finish
11. New decals
12. New exhaust system
1. The lightweight, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 955cc three cylinder
motor is based on the Daytona 955i's unit, but has been retuned to
produce 110PS (108bhp) at 9,200rpm and 97Nm (72lb.ft) at 5,800rpm, with
a huge spread of torque across the rev range. These figures compare
with the outgoing T509 Speed Triple's 108PS (106bhp) and 85Nm (63lb.ft).
Changes to the engine from the Daytona's unit are:
Cylinder liners.
Pistons.
Camshafts - revised lift and timing to boost midrange power
EFI - engine management system is digitally remapped to match the new
characteristics of the engine.
2. The radiator has been made narrower to reduce the frontal profile,
cutting down on drag and improving the looks, at the same time as
increasing the capacity for increased cooling ability to suit the new
engine.
3. The throttle bodies have been changed and now use 5 degree
butterflies in place of the previous 12 degree items, to provide the
rider with more precise control at very small throttle openings. These
have resulted in a liquid smooth power delivery that enhances low speed
riding particularly.
4. A new stepper motor in the air bypass system eliminates hunting at
idle, giving the bike a more reliable tickover speed.
5. A key benefit of the revised engine management tune is significantly improved fuel consumption.
6. The airbox of the 1999 Speed Triple is constructed of screwed
together components rather than welded to improve quality and ease
maintenance, further enhanced by its new snap-on fit.
7. The electrical wiring and coolant hoses have been redesigned and
re-routed in another move to simplify maintenance.
8. For even cleaner exhaust emissions a closed catalytic converter is
fitted in some markets.
9. The sealed battery is fitted as standard for ease of maintenance.
10. Like the Daytona 955i, which shares the Speed Triple's frame, a new
gunmetal finish has been applied for improved looks.
11. The Speed Triple features the new decals of Triumphs 1999 range.
12. The exhaust header pipes are new to match the 955cc engine.
